You can add new logical devices to your storage space at any time, as long as adequate disk drive space is available. Adaptec Storage Manager offers two methods for creating logical devices—express configuration and custom configuration.
To get started, select Express configuration or Custom configuration, then click Next.
When you use Express configuration, Adaptec Storage Manager automatically creates logical devices by grouping together same-sized physical disk drives, and assigns RAID levels based on the number of physical disk drives in a logical device:
A logical device with three or more physical disk drives is assigned RAID 5.
A logical device with two physical disk drives is assigned RAID 1.
A logical device with only a single physical disk drive becomes a simple volume, which does not offer redundancy.
Note! To create a logical device with any other RAID level, you must use the custom method. See How RAID Protects Your Data for more information about RAID levels.
SAS and SATA disk drives are grouped in separate logical devices.
Logical Device size is set by Adaptec Storage Manager and automatically maximizes the capacity of the disk drives. Logical device size can not be adjusted during creation. To change the logical device size after a logical device has been created, see Adding Capacity to a Logical Device.
When you use Custom configuration, Adaptec Storage Manager guides you through the process of creating logical devices, helping you group disk drives, set RAID levels, determine logical device size, and configure advanced settings. Use this option when you want to create customized logical devices with any or all available disk drives.
